How to Clean Your Custom Window Treatments Without Damaging Them

Window treatments can add style and functionality to your home, but they also need to be properly maintained and cleaned to keep them looking their best. Hunter Douglas window treatments are designed to require minimal care and cleaning. Hunter Douglas offers a variety of window treatments, and the recommended cleaning methods for each type of treatment may vary.

Here are some general cleaning tips for Hunter Douglas window treatments:

• Dust regularly with a soft brush or feather duster. This will help to prevent dust buildup and dirt.
• Spot clean spills and stains with a mild detergent and water. Use a clean, white cloth to avoid any dye transfer.

Here are some specific cleaning tips for different types of Hunter Douglas window treatments:

• Duette® Honeycomb Shades: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, spot clean with a mild detergent and water.
• Silhouette® Window Shadings: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, spot clean with a mild detergent and water.
• Allegro® Roman Shades: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, spot clean with a mild detergent and water.
• PowerView® Motorized Window Shades: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, consult the specific cleaning instructions for your product.
• Shutters: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, wipe down with a damp cloth. You can also use a garden hose to rinse them off.
• Wood Blinds: Vacuum regularly with the brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, wipe down with a damp cloth.
• Use a soft clean cloth, dust cloth or dusting mitt. Lower blind to its full length, tilt slats almost all the way down and dust. Not closing all the way allows dusting where the slats overlap.
• Blinds may be vacuumed using a brush attachment.
• Protect all fine wood products from exposure to steam, high moisture areas, rain or sprinkler systems to ensure their long life.
• When cleaning any window, spray glass cleaner on a cloth rather than directly on the window. This will prevent damage to the finish from splattering cleaner.
• Stained blinds, like wood furniture, should be treated periodically with lemon oil or other wood preservative to protect their finish and enhance their luster.
• Note: Ultrasonic cleaning or use of chemical solvents and scrubbing cleansers are not recommended. They will damage the product.

  • Bathtub cleaning/water immersion. This method is used for Modern Precious Metals aluminum blinds (with the exception of the Natural Elements collection)
  • Immerse entire shade assembly in lukewarm water with mild detergent.
  • Wash for five minutes by gently moving liquid around with your fingers. Not recommended for blinds with decorative tapes. Important! Do not immerse headrails on EasyRise™, LiteRise® , PowerView™, PowerTilt™, UltraGlide® , Vertiglide™ or the bottom rail on SimpleLift™ systems.

• Curtains: Wash in the washing machine according to the care label.

• Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on Hunter Douglas window treatments.
